On August 26th, in the year of our Lord 1858, the "Parkers Grove Regular Baptist Church" was formed, and Richard King was her first pastor. She had 27 charter members, and revival was in the air like the smell of the coming autumn leaves. Six additional members were added in the first year.
It was said of Elder King that he would walk through mud and rain to preach to two people. A man with an iron constitution and of strong convictions; And those sheep to whom he indebted himself to were said to have been staunch christians like the Bereans of old, knowing that blessed peace that comes from breaking daily the bread of life.
Soon the Lord in unusual circumstances provided enough land for a meeting house to be built, and they like Nehemiah set out to labor for the Saviour. Lumber was nailed up in February, shingling in early March. With interior work done and seating provided, the church gathered together for its first meeting on March 31st, 1860.
As with any endeavor, all was not always sunshine and beauty. The Civil War erupted and death swallowed up her bounty, also a tragic fire broke out only 17 years after their beloved meeting house had been built and all that was left was ashes and tears. But these were not timid individuals, wasting no time they paid for new lumber and a building was soon constructed.
This is just a brief summary and excerpt from our history. Our building has many years behind it. No one knows the amount of tears those old oak floors might have soaked into them, nor can one tell as they walk around the property the amount of times others have done the same as they cried out to God among the groves, but I truly believe it is a special place, and most importantly I believe Gods hand is resting upon it.
It is a strange thing to consider, but we may look back upon yesterday soon enough and call it history. What a marvelous God we serve, and truly it is "His-Story". The amazing thing is, that I believe we are continuing to make History here! We are not a perfect people and we do not have a perfect pastor, but we do serve a Perfect God, who continues to write our story every time we assemble to worship Him who is so Worthy!
